On the occasion of the Contest of Composing Name and Slogan for the “Residential Unit 3” project in Xuan Phuong Urban Area, we paid a visit to the house of Professor Vu Khieu who was selected to be the Chairman of Board of Examiners. Due to his poor health, he could not attend the discussion about the examining process. On behalf of the Board of Examiners, we visited him together with 10 selected proposals for the hope to find the most meaningful one.
Coming in the modest house located at Van Bao corner, we were received by a 20 or 21-year-old girl who is his granddaughter. She invited us to wait for him in the living room. After that we met the professor in his private room where he works and studies everyday. We met a thin old man whose hair is completely white, but his eyes are still very bright and vivacious. The old man was sitting in a small room which is about 15 m2 in width and whose paint and bedding cushions are white. The room covers a great number of books as well as his souvenirs and memories. Especially, there are three big paintings made of different materials which describe his portrait including one made of precious stone, a lacquered painting and one manually embroidered by a Vietnamese craftsman. Thanks to a big window viewing a balcony which is filled with natural colours, the room is always cool and fresh.
While the professor was analyzing the meaning and structure of the answers, we were totally amazed at his profound knowledge. After listening to his explanation of the meaning of each proposal, the Board of Examiners eventually selected the most interesting and meaningful proposal. More surprisingly, he asked the names of the Chairman of the Board of Directors and General Director of Tasco and suddenly told his granddaughter to bring him a brush and paper. In spite of some wonder, we raised no question because we realized he was paying much attention to something. We merely sat quietly to observe his gestures and waited.
The professor began to write right after the granddaughter had prepared everything including paper and brushes (both red and black). The letters gradually appeared on the white surface in which the words including
Despite the age of 94 years old, Mr Vu Khieu is still lucid and healthy. He is regarded as a big cultural by Vietnam scholars. He is the first writer among Vietnamese writers to be awarded with the title “Labour Hero in the renovation period”. Moreover, the Professor is also the first director of Vietnam Institute of Sociology and former Deputy Director of Vietnam News Agency together with the Deputy Head of Committee of Social Sciences (currently Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences).
